Humans are complex, and I think in entertainment in general, it’s very easy to put people in boxes,” Graynor says. “Most people who are funny, as this show explores, have a real depth and darkness that sometimes gets ignored, or people don’t realize. I just know I won’t have a side job as a professional stand-up,” Graynor says. She got braver at subsequent attempts, performing as herself and even adding her own material to the routine. The first time Graynor dared to do an open mic, she registered under her character’s name and performed material from I’m Dying Up Here. She was inspired when she got laughs, but did her fair share of bombing as well-which is a good thing, she points out, because like any stand-up, her alter ego has rough shows. “It was 3 o’clock in the afternoon at a coffee shop one day, and 1 o’clock in the afternoon in someone’s backyard with a microphone that wasn’t plugged into anything the next,” recalls Graynor. It wasn’t glamorous, but the experience gave Graynor a taste of life as a comedian just starting out-and willing to perform just about anywhere.

Graynor, whose TV credits include The Sopranos and Fringe, initially practiced being a stand-up in the privacy of her own home, subbing a hairbrush for the mic. Created by David Flebotte, loosely based on William Knoedelseder’s book I’m Dying Up Here: Heartbreak & High Times in Stand-Up Comedy’s Golden Era, and executive produced by Jim Carrey, the series, premiering June 4, follows a group of comics honing their craft-many impatiently-at a comedy club called Goldie’s in 1973, hoping it will be the gateway to an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson-the career-making gig of the era. “It was terrifying and hilarious and thrilling,” actress Ari Graynor says of the time she spent at open mics in preparation for her role as Cassie Feder, a stand-up comedian from Texas trying to make it in Los Angeles, in the Showtime drama I’m Dying Up Here.
